The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of work to present to the public. Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the “Solo Art Series” competition: 1. Their art. 2. Their artist biography. 3. Their artist statement. These elements were evaluated and judged, resulting in the selection of the artists who will be featured in individual month-long solo art exhibitions.
Below are Jay’s Artist Biography and his Artist Statement, along with 25 of his paintings. We hope that you will take the time to read his information and to take a look at his work.
Jay Johansen draws inspiration from the complexities of human expression, cultural icons, and the shifting moods of nature. Influences from classical portraiture blend with contemporary elements, creating a style that bridges tradition and modernity. His fascination with influential figures, such as Nelson Mandela and John Lennon, reflects his belief in art’s power to capture legacy and emotion. Additionally, the serenity and vastness of the ocean inspire many of his newer works, infusing them with movement and tranquility. Through vibrant color, textured layers, and meaningful subjects, Johansen’s art celebrates the beauty of individuality and the ever-evolving connection between people and their environment.
My art explores identity, emotion, and legacy. Through portraits and oceanic scenes, I capture not just likeness but essence, using bold palettes and textures to evoke nostalgia, intrigue, and reflection inviting viewers to connect with deeper stories.
