Ferenc Csurgai is a sculptor and painter, a graduate of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts (1984). His work is a testament to innovation, marked by an unconventional medium choice: concrete. This fascination has redefined my artistic identity, challenging the perception of concrete as merely rigid and heavy, and transforming it into ethereal, light, and transparent creations.
Ferenc’s choice of reinforced concrete is more than a medium; it's a canvas for scientific and artistic experimentation. Throughout his explorations, he developed a unique weather-resistant concrete composite, a blend of art and innovation, which has been recognized with Hungarian and European patents. This groundbreaking material not only enhances the longevity of his artwork but also holds potential applications in the construction industry.
2023 was a landmark year for exhibitions. Ferenc participated in group shows like 'Faces of Concrete 8.0 Industrial Silence' at Nick Gallery, Pécs, 'Occupation of Space' at the VI. Sculpture Biennale, MANK Gallery, Szentendre, and 'Osas Plus No.2' at Vasarely Museum, Budapest. A significant highlight was his solo exhibition 'Concrete²'. His artistic philosophy centers on the paradox of using robust concrete to create delicate, translucent forms. This not only defies conventional views of the material but also symbolizes art's transformative power. Ferenc’s vision is to continue pushing the boundaries of material and form, creating art that resonates with both aesthetic beauty and functional innovation.
In the realm of art, I find myself drawn to the exploration of the balance between the tangible and the intangible. My work is a journey through geometric-organic structures, where I seek to understand and represent the intricate dance between materiality and spirituality.
Why I Create: My art is born from a deep curiosity about the world and our place within it. It's an exploration of my favorite material, inspired by ancient cultures and the practice of introspective contemplation. This journey is not just about external observations but a profound introspection, encompassing all that I experience and know.
How I Create: My process is experimentation with concrete, an unusual, resistant, hard and heavy material that I bend the force to express organic, geometric forms. The techniques I employ are not just about crafting art but about refining finding the boundaries of material.
What My Art Means to Me: My creations are not just objects of beauty but symbols of my inner transformations and realizations. Each piece is a step towards understanding myself and the world around me in its most authentic form.
Conciseness and Clarity: I believe in the power of simplicity. My art is a silent conversation with the viewer, an invitation to explore the depths of human experience without the need for elaborate words or explanations. It's an open-ended dialogue, where what I see in my creations might differ from what others perceive, and that's the beauty of it.
