Artist Biography

Brian Hallas is a dynamic and multifaceted artist from Shrewsbury Township, New Jersey, celebrated for his innovative approach to abstract digital photography. His work, primarily crafted using an iPhone, stands out for its vivid use of color, texture, and surreal content. By manipulating images through various apps and blending techniques, Brian creates striking, painterly abstractions that immerse viewers in otherworldly gardens and dreamlike scenes. His daily practice of creating and sharing these works is deeply rooted in a response to the chaos of modern life, offering a moment of sensory immersion and escape.

Brian draws inspiration from nature, particularly through his work as a gardener at a local nursery. This connection to the natural world seamlessly blends with his digital artistry, allowing him to continue evolving his visual style and creating works that speak to a wide audience. Through his photography, Brian Hallas weaves together technology and nature into a tactile visual tapestry, leaving a lasting impact on viewers worldwide.

Artist Statement

As an abstract digital photographer, I create hallucinatory gardens and landscapes of the imagination - a realm of intense colors, shapes, and textures. I work exclusively with my iPhone to explore what surprises that apps, layering, and blending give me. To this end, my inspiration is the natural world of my surroundings, and I continue to evolve my visual style by weaving together technology and nature into a tapestry of sensory exploration.

My improvisations often result in painterly abstract images that give viewers a tactile visual experience. I like to entice viewers on an adventure to see the unseen, finding perspectives we don’t normally observe without wearing a very different set of lenses.

My tastes are stimulated by an eclectic spectrum of artists from every art form, era, and genre whose spirits never fail to encourage my creativity. At nearly 72 years old, I have turned to photography as my primary means of creativity, after a long, rich life collaborating in film, music, and particularly the theater, as a sound designer in NYC. I’m an Outsider and a Late Bloomer, and shaping and sharing these abstract photographs is my response to the chaos of modern life, offering both my viewers and I moments of sublime immersion and escape.
