Their art.  2. Their artist biography.  3.  Their artist statement.  These elements were evaluated and judged, which resulted in the selection of the artists who will be featured in individual month-long solo art exhibitions.  This was the 24th “Solo Art Series” Art Competition that the gallery has conducted.

Below are Debra’s Artist Biography, her Artist Statement, along with 18 of her paintings.  We hope that you will take the time to read Debra’s information and to take a look at her beautiful “Bather Series” of paintings.

Artist Biography

From the intense, diverse energy of New York, Debra creates powerful narrative works drawn from her imagination. Her work is bold, whimsical, colorful and symbolic. Her color palette is inspired by the intense light of the southern hemisphere of her youth. Under vivid blue skies, nature’s colors pulsate with life. She is drawn to the unnatural juxtaposition of images and fantasy. Whimsy is often expressed through symbolic use of native birds. If studied closer these become the energy, the clue as to the tone of the narrative. Debra uses the exotic floral natives, like the Waratah, morphed with the human form to create haunting yet striking images.

Originally from Sydney, Australia, she grew up a bare foot youth exploring nature in all its' forms. A pencil or paintbrush her voice. Debra then went on to study life drawing and portraiture at The Paddington Art School in Sydney. Her fascination with the figure combined with her passion for dance led to dynamic figurative pieces where the subject almost leaps off the canvas. Executed in oil on canvas her stimulating symbolic paintings are rich with vibrant color. Early in her career she took to travel overseas, settling for a year in Mexico to devote to her art. Around that time her work became infused with an almost decorative carnival quality. This led to paintings now held in private collections internationally.

Artist Statement

My bather series places an unposed figure in a surreal cocoon of nature. My creative language are the ocean inlets and vegetation of my Australian roots. I chose a vintage bather in my series to reflect a timelessness. There's a longing for a world that used to feel safe. I chose expressive color to enhance the mood of the narrative. The Native Portrait series is an expression of years of being masked. The Australian native birds chosen for each portrait, speaks to the personality of the sitter, their face hidden behind the floral mask.

Debra’s work can be viewed on her website.

Below is James’s Artist Biography and his Artist Statement, along with 25 of his artworks. We hope that you will take the time to read James’s information and to take a look at his artwork.

Artist Biography

James Su (Lingfeng) is a contemporary artist known for his use of digital coding in his artwork. Born in Shanghai, he entered the Shanghai Art Institute to study art, laying a solid base for his art skills. He started his art career as a freelance illustrator. His illustrations have been published in many books and magazines.

In 1985, he came to the United States to study engineering and obtained his MS and Ph.D. He published many books and his work has been exhibited in galleries and museums many galleries and museums around the world. he was a professor at three universities.

Currently, Dr. Su resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. Su's interest in the intersection of art and technology led him to experiment with using AI to create art. His artwork often explores the relationship between humans and machines and seeks to highlight the unique creative possibilities that emerge when we collaborate with AI. This submittal to LST is one of Su's projects called the "Hospitals in the Pandemic" painting series, which was completed in collaboration with AI. The series explores both the potential of AI in creating artwork with humanistic themes and the limitations of AI in capturing the emotional depth of human experience. Overall, Su's work challenges traditional notions of art and creativity and raises important questions about the role of technology in shaping the future of the arts.

Artist Statement

"Hospitals in the Pandemic" is a series of paintings created by James Su in collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI). While AI is often used for commercial art, it is rare to see it used for humanistic themes in artworks.

With the COVID-19 pandemic causing widespread devastation, Su sought to create a series of paintings that would capture the experiences of patients, doctors, nurses, and family members in hospitals during this time. The resulting AI paintings were completed under the guidance and training of the artist, with AI producing successful works that feature clever compositions, harmonious color themes, and accurate depictions of figurative characters.

In addition, AI developed a unique self-painting style that blends post-impressionism, expressionism, and Fauvism in a way that is both innovative and true to the artist's vision. Su examines whether AI has emotions through its works. While artists typically infuse their work with their own emotions and experiences, AI lacks these qualities. The paintings in the series reflect this, with characters depicted as relatively indifferent and lacking in emotional depth.

However, the question remains whether AI can be trained to develop emotions as it gains knowledge and experience. This exploration of AI's emotional capabilities raises fascinating questions about the intersection of art and technology.

The paintings in the series showcase the unique creative possibilities that emerge when humans collaborate with AI, while also highlighting the limitations and challenges that arise when we attempt to imbue machines with human-like qualities.

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery is extremely pleased to announce that Paulo Delgado has been named as the Gallery’s new featured artist and he will now be promoted by the gallery for the next 14 days in the gallery’s Artist Showcase.

Paulo is an award-winning artist based in Canada. Paulo was selected as 1 of the top twelve finalists in the gallery’s 20th Solo Art Exhibition Series. The placement in this competition qualified his art to be showcased in this feature.

Paulo’s Artist Showcase feature will be promoted to over 350+ major news outlets, with inclusion on Google News & Bing News. In addition, the gallery will also be featuring and promoting her artwork in the gallery’s various social media networks for further exposure.

Below are Paulo’s Artist Biography and 5 images that were submitted to this competition.

Artist Biography:

Paulo Delgado is known for his faceless figures that intrigues his audience. He was born in Mozambique and grew up in a little village in Portugal. He completed his degree in Graphic Design and worked in that area for almost 20 years. In 2010, he immigrated to Canada.

“I like to paint the everyday life of the country that took me in. The light and the colour of the prairie sky is so impressive.”

By simplifying each figure, he can capture their essence. The backgrounds are made up of geometric shapes and lines that contrasts with the central figures.

Artist Statement:

With a 20-year career in Graphic Design, my paintings reflect my acquired habits in this profession. I am a self-taught painter and never received any formal training. Acrylic is my chosen medium and I have worked to perfect my technique using this medium. I like the simplification of form and the shapes take in a poster-like feeling.

The face is the mirror of the soul and with it, we can understand their state of mind. The simplification of the face is done on purpose. It is incredibly challenging to use shapes and colour to transmit what is in your soul.

Some of my favourite themes include landscapes and the Portuguese ethnography. I also enjoy exploring the colours of the Manitoba prairies. The light of the skies fascinates me and inspires me, especially sunsets. The use of geometric shapes in the background’s contrasts with the main figures in the foreground as if it were a set of a play. The use of strong colours and different nuances is a constant in my work. Painting for me is a stress reliever which allows me to relax and find balance in my everyday life. I want to tell stories through my painting.
