For this solo exhibition, the gallery will distribute, promote, and circulate press releases to hundreds of major news outlets, with guaranteed inclusion on Google News & Bing News. The Gallery will also provide social media distribution through LST Gallery’s broad social media network.

John’s art will also be featured on the gallery’s YouTube Channel, and with an event postcard.

The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of work to present to the public. Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the “Solo Art Series” competition: 1. Their art. 2. Their artist biography. 3. Their artist statement. These elements were evaluated and judged, resulting in the selection of the artists who will be featured in individual month-long solo art exhibitions.

Below is John’s Artist Biography and his Artist Statement, along with 25 of his Mod Pop Art artworks. We hope that you will take the time to read his information and to take a look at his work.

Artist Biography

John Lathrop’s childhood was an exploration of art, meticulously studying artists like Bill Watterson and Berkeley Breathed to Andy Warhol and Peter Max to Salvador Dalí and Mark Ryden. Consequently, his own art evolved from penciled cartoons to realistic portraits to surrealist psychedelic scenescapes. As a teen, John earned commissioned murals, posters, T-shirts, advertisements, and a weekly comic strip in the local newspaper—all before graduating high school. Later, while focused on his other creative passion, music—based solely on the need for cover art for his releases—John worked for years to master Adobe software, eventually becoming a graphic designer, realizing how much he loved the artform.

In 2014, John opened his art and design studio, Plaid Design, officially migrating to the digital art space. This led to the development of his unique art style, which he lovingly calls Mod Pop Art. His mixed-media approach combines hand-painted digital artwork with graphic design techniques to create his vibrant, colorful, clean-line style. Drawing inspiration primarily from pop culture, John’s graphic portrait and poster work breathes new life into classic and current references, putting a fun, original spin on pop surrealism, often with a twist of humor and absurdist parody. The result, he hopes, is bold and striking eye-candy, with a vibe that feels vintage yet unmistakably modern.

Along with commissioned art and design work, John has been selling his original art pieces in signed/numbered limited edition fine art prints to clients all over the world for over a decade.

Artist Statement

I'm John Lathrop, and I make Mod Pop Art.

Pop culture is family. We grew up with our movies, our music, our novels, our TV, and our video games. Pop culture can influence, guide, and comfort us, especially that which is nostalgic. In this spirit, with my Mod Pop Art, I utilize pop culture as my primary subject matter to conjure feelings of warmth, pleasure, fun, exhilaration, and surprise by adding unexpected and humorous twists (the Mod) and shining brightly colored lights (the Pop) on the people, places, and things (the Art) so many of us have admired and adored throughout our lives. And I do it without judgment or commentary, but with genuine reverence, homage, and love.To see more of John’s work, visit his website.
