Below are Heather’s Artist Biography, her Artist Statement, along with 25 of her paintings.  We hope that you will take the time to read Heather’s information and to take a look at her artwork.

Artist Biography

Heather Coen in an award winning artist based in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Her paintings have been recognized and published by every major art magazine in the United States including, Art of the West, Plein Air Magazine, American Art Collector, Colored Pencil Magazine, Southwest Art and others.  She began her career by apprenticing to two major artists and then, over the coming years, took classes and workshops to hone her skills. Recently, although her career was halted by a tragedy, she has risen from the ashes and began painting with a vengeance.

She belongs to such prestigious national organizations like Oil Painters of America, Women Artists of the West, National Oil and Acrylic Painters as well as a number of local art venues. She currently has work in three different galleries in two different states including Jackson Hole and Cheyenne, Wyoming and Estes Park, Colorado.

Heather is a landscape, still life and wildlife artist.  Her work comes from her many travels all over South America, Canada and the United States.  They are created over many months by adding many layers of paint or pastel on a canvas or surface.

Heather believes she is, “Creating a legacy, one original at a time.”

Artist Statement

Having been born with a paint brush in my hand, my mother survived and passed on many of her artistic skills to me. Apprenticed to three master artists over a six-year period, I launched with advantages. I soon became the President of a local art organization and learned the inner workings of shows, exhibits and keeping a herd of cats going in somewhat the same direction. I was the prize coordinator for the Women Artists of the West 50th Jubilee Show which happened to coincide with the outbreak of COVID. The organization could not hold the National Show and everything had to be coordinated and shipped. It took weeks.

Overcoming adversity is a part of every artist's life. I've found that persistence, ethics and just plain being stubborn helps. I have drawers full with awards and ribbons. I became a Master Signature member of Paint America after winning a number of competitions through their venues. It took me eight years to accumulate enough points.

I also have my Signature designation with Plein Air Artists Colorado and Pastel Society of Colorado. Moving from the mountains of Colorado to the hot, dry desert in Arizona, I found that plein air work helped tremendously in changing my palette and way of thinking. It was not an easy transition.

Below is Catherine’s Artist Biography and her Artist Statement, along with 15 of her artworks.  We hope that you will take the time to read Catherine’s information and to take a look at his artwork.

Artist Biography

Catherine Kirkwood has been painting since she was a child. At age 12 she began oil painting lessons and art was her passion all through school. She attended the School of Art at Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y. She also spent a year at the California College of the Arts in Oakland, Ca. and received her B.A. in drawing from the University of New Mexico. She continued at the University of New Mexico and received her M.A. in painting in 1974. From there she moved to New York where she worked and painted for several years before moving to Santa Fe, N.M. where she currently resides. She has shown nationally and won numerous awards for her work.

Catherine has always been a realist and her work is involved in images from the natural world. For many years she painted the southwest landscape and then became intrigued with water. She has painted water gardens over many decades and after a two year move to Miami, Florida began using plants and flowers in her work. In the past year she has been photographing at a local flower farm which has resulted in large canvases of flowers enlarged beyond their true size.

Complexity is a feature of Catherine’s work. She involves herself with detail and the paintings are full. It is the artist’s hope that the viewer will be able to visit a painting many times and still find new elements to explore visually.

Artist Statement

I have been painting for as long as I can remember and don’t think I ever seriously considered any other path in life other than that of an artist. I lived in New York City for several years in my mid-twenties but am happier in the country. My work is rooted in nature and that is where I gain inspiration. I have always been drawn to realism although I am straying further away from strict adherence to the photograph as I progress along in my career. I spent years drawing but a brush is really my most natural tool. The color and richness of oil paint along with the extended period of workability make it my favorite medium.

I grew up on the East Coast and spent my summers swimming and in the winter, I walked the beach for solitude and contemplation. My series of water paintings started in Santa Fe in the desert southwest, away from water. I am drawn to the quiet and “otherworldliness” of water, the sense of things hidden in the depths. I am visually fascinated by the different layers one sees when looking at the water—the reflections of the sky, the movement on the surface and the abstraction of what is below the surface. Water lilies and koi add another dimension of color and form above and under the water.

I consider myself an interpreter of nature and as an artist, someone who greatly appreciates the beauty of nature through using it as my model.

Artist Statement

There is so much more to capturing an image than just the technical aspects of photography. I strongly believe that an image can speak to the heart and when I am capturing an image, I attempt to use the existing light and color to convey the emotion that I feel in that moment. I truly desire to harness strong emotion through my images. I am drawn to our Nations beauty and am always excited when I have the opportunity to capture and share a new image.

Artist Biography

Ilona is an image-maker and a digital artist. Taking images gives her as much fun as processing them. Digital tools and painting helped convert her photos and composites into digital art.

Learning new ways of making her art different gives her pleasure; she evolves and moves on, so she does not get boring to her viewers or bored with herself.

She is regularly published in International Art Magazines and participates in numerous Art Exhibitions. It is incredible what we can produce in the digital age, and it is fun.

Artist Statement

In these last two years, we had so many restrictions. We couldn’t travel overseas and sometimes not even to the next suburb. My art is my sanity. Some of you probably think the word sanity is not coming to mind when you look at some of my artwork. I kept swamped during this time. I also tried to get inventive and created my models in the digital world.

For this exhibition, I came up with the idea to paint portraits in the style of Art Deco. I painted the illustrations in Procreate on my iPad. It is fascinating that my art lets me bring my fantasy to print and that I can share my somewhat warped ideas with the viewers. I hope that my work evokes questions and triggers your fantasy.

Artist Biography

Garry Arzumanyan is an award-winning self-taught artist whose paintings have been exhibited in Netherlands, the United States, Australia, Slovenia, France, Italy, Russia, Serbia, Belarus, and Armenia. He describes his art as being born by both women and the sea, stating that he has not yet encountered "a deeper, more enigmatic, nor more fatal phenomena".

Each painting is a separate story, through which he tells the audience about something worrying him and trying to explain his point of view. Every painting is a dialogue with the audience which may last from a few minutes to lifetime. Garry loves to discover people`s emotions, fears, dark and light sides in this dialogue. His expressive compositions are created with oils, pencils, and charcoal on canvas or paper.

Born in Armenia and from early childhood inspired by the works of Ivan Aivazovsky and Francis Bacon, he became a multiple winner of various competitions since childhood.

Artist Statement

When I start my paintings, the first thing I do is outlining complexity and harmony of the sky and clouds, and when the sky is fully done, I get to the two layers of the sea and before finishing the sea, I start painting figures over the sea. Drawing figures over the water is the main and the most time-consuming process of my painting, and it may sometimes last months. I usually start with 2 or 3 figures, but with the time this number can get more, at times with unexpected images for myself. Each painting is a separate story, through which I tell the audience about something worrying me and trying to explain my point of view describing the duality of human feelings through the prism of existential perception. Every painting is a dialogue with the audience which may last from a few minutes to lifetime. I love to discover people`s emotions, fears, dark and light sides in the dialogue. Many people say that I paint a sea, but I do not paint a sea. I paint people, through water and sea images. I paint people with their weak and strong, dark and light sides, people with their fears, people with their dreams.

Artist Biography

Eileen E. Senter is a self-taught digital artist. She has always enjoyed art and dabbled in t-shirt painting, ceramics and clay molding. However, after retirement with the British Government 15 years ago, she chose photography as her medium of choice.

Her first camera was a Kodak instamatic but Eileen has never liked straight out of the camera images and very soon researched various software photography programs that would help her grow as an artist and showcase her artwork. She blends programs together, sometimes two to three times until she gets to the “aha moment!”

Eileen’s favorite subjects are wildlife, flowers, rural scenes for composites, anything in nature. Her work has been published in the Galveston Monthly magazines a few times.

Artist Statement

I am originally from Nottingham, England, now living in Texas with my Husband, who is my best friend and avid supporter of my work. I have always had a desire for photography but creating art is my true passion. I am self-taught and work with many digital programs using my images to create and compose with the desire of bringing to life what I see through the camera for a finished and combined work of art.

I painted people or the moments in my life that moved me. I hope the viewers will relate my artwork to their own life” remarks Judy. While Judy paints various subjects, portraits are always Judy’s favorite. She is fascinated by every human face, whether an old woman in Nepal or a little girl next door. She not only wants to paint an individual's face but his/her soul. When asked about her painting style, Judy described her style as classic realism with a contemporary approach. Artist Biography

Born in Schenectady, New York, raised in Washington, D.C., Brian Mark has been intrigued by art of all kinds for most of his life. Literature appealed to him and ultimately, Mark taught English literature at university. While he was doing scholarly work on English literature, Mark began to feel a tug toward doing, not just intellectualizing about art.

Mark’s first artistic foray was in woodworking. After a while, he could not shake the impact Dylan Thomas’ poem, “In My Craft or Sullen Art” had on him. Mark kept feeling he was doing craft, not art, and wanted more. A friend urged him to look seriously at stone sculpture as his art focus.

Eventually, Brian Mark went to that sculpting class, and as he tells it: ‘As soon as I set foot in the studio and looked at the work the students were doing, I was hooked.’ That was 20 years ago. Mr. Mark has been joyfully doing stone sculpting from that date to now. Sculpting is something he simply cannot NOT do. It is a passion.

He creates abstract sculptures in harder stone such as marble, calcite, onyx, and others. He does not strive to make statements with his art, but rather ‘tries to bring beauty into this world, and at the same time soothe his soul by fulfilling the creative process.’ His work has been seen in many art shows and looks forward to continuing his love/work in stone.

Artist Statement

Nature is raw. Art is practiced. Each stone has its own language and I work to understand that language. Some of the learning comes from striving to listen to what each stone is saying. Each has a color, a shape, and a hidden beauty. While valuing that uniqueness, I strive to let my imagination fly free, in order build upon nature’s creation: blending raw nature with understanding the language of this stone. And, so begins the conversation between stone and sculptor. When a stone selects me, I cannot know what striations, hues, density, faults, lie under the surface. As I begin chiseling and grinding, the stone talks to me, saying, “I have this special colored line running through me: preserve it”. Or, “slightly shift the angle of this or that curve”. Or, “work with me: together we can bring forth that special surprise, that new beauty never before seen”. The conversation continues until nature’s stone and my imagination marry and together say, “stop – our work is done”. For me that conversation must lead to a sculpture that has movement, movement, movement. That movement is stone brought to life in a way never before seen.

Brian’s work can be viewed on his website.

The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of work to present to the public.  Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the “Solo Art Series” competition: 1. Their art.  2. Their artist biography.  3.  Their artist statement.  These elements were evaluated and judged, which resulted in the selection of the artists who will be featured in individual month-long solo art exhibitions.  This was the 21st “Solo Art Series” Art Competition that the gallery has conducted.

Below is David’s Artist Biography, his Artist Statement, along with 25 of his abstract artworks.  We hope that you will take the time to read David’s information and to take a look at his artwork.

Artist Biography

David Wigner became interested in art when he was in high school, and worked primarily with watercolors. His mother influenced him while growing up, as she enjoyed creating watercolor art, and saw that he had natural ability towards drawing. So she gave David some of her materials and shared her techniques with him.

Through college at Grand Valley State, David took several art courses, but finished with a degree in philosophy. This made sense because he is a philosopher. He also worked in a mixed media format of combining elements into his works to develop his own style as a means of finding out what it was in him that he was trying to bring about in his art.  After college, David joined The Grand Valley Artists Association. This helped him tremendously, meeting new artists and working with some of them.

David’s latest passion as an artist has been creating abstract pour paintings. This format always challenges his strong sense of color and finding balance in his work. Pour painting keeps him sane. Like life, this whole process is inspiring David all the time. His son helped him build his website to help him share his work.

Artist Statement

There's something about pour painting that energizes me and satisfies my mind & soul. If I'm feeling upset with life, I can express that emotion in my work. When I'm feeling content, my work takes on that emotion too, having a calmer look and feel.

Artist Biography

As far as she can remember, Arlene Buster’s devotion to painting emerged at a very young age. As told by her parents and her grandmother, whenever they would check up on her, they would find her painting or drawing by herself, in the quiet corners of her home. Her devotion to art was further nourished when her mother took her to inquire about her very first private art class. When she graduated from high school, she pursued her art at Montclair State University, earning a bachelor's degree in painting and drawing before attending the Academy of Art University. However, her journey was interrupted as she battled personal struggles with illness that made it impossible for her to pursue her art and even accomplish everyday tasks. Throughout those painful struggles, she thought a lot about the artist Frida Kahlo and the struggles she endured.

When Arlene began walking and using her hands again, it was a significant crossroad in her life. At the present time, in spite of some considerable impairments and pain she still experiences, she is much better. Painting for Arlene is personal, especially now, for the reason that it permits her to escape the painful obstacles in life and imparts her with purpose. The hours become minutes while she narrates her stories with her brushes filled with paint.

Artist Statement

In the words of Marshall McLuhan, “Technology is just not a happenstance and not just something that got there when nobody was noticing and so, we are responsible for our technologies and the effects of our technologies, as we are responsible for tidying up our grammar.”

I have created my series Absence of Privacy because I believe everyone has a right to privacy. Likewise, I believe that most unscripted moments in life, should remain unscripted and free from a world of webcams. To illustrate the ways in which webcams have invaded our lives, I have painted twelve paintings with oil on canvas. I paint the figure in everyday settings as they are being watched through a surveillance camera or webcam.

My interest in this topic began when I created a still-life oil painting of a webcam for my Contemporary Painting class in 2011. It felt eerie and overpowering. It was agitating to see a webcam up-close staring at me. For this reason, I began reflecting on the multitude of cameras that were gawking at me throughout the day. Prior to this, I had never given this much attention. As I read articles about privacy abuses, I felt compelled to communicate these issues through painting.
