The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of work to present to the public.  Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the “Solo Art Series” competition: 1. Their art.  2. Their artist biography.  3.  Their artist statement.  These elements were evaluated and judged, which resulted in the selection of the artists who will be featured in individual month-long solo art exhibitions.

Below are Jason’s Artist Biography, his Artist Statement, along with 20 of his sculptures.  We hope that you will take the time to read Jason’s information and to take a look at his art.

Artist Biography

Jason Shih was born in Taiwan, where traditional craftsmen are active. He has been interested in folk crafts, temple architecture, wood and stone carvings since childhood. In 1993, he began to specialize in metal sculpture when he was a sophomore in the Fine Arts Department of Taipei National University of the Arts.

After 2 years of compulsory military service, Jason obtained his MFA degree in metal from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2001. And then, he served as the famous American metal sculptor Albert Paley's assistant, involved in metal crafts and large-scale public art work practices. In 2002, Jason returned to Taiwan and began to devote himself to the creation of metal sculpture and public art.

Furthermore, in 2008, he was also selected as the first artist-in-residence of the New Taipei City Gold Museum, Taiwan.

While developing his creative career, Jason Shih also did not forget to pursue advanced studies in art theory. In 2015, he obtained his Ph.D. from the China Academy of Art. And, in 2022, he obtained an MBA degree from National Taiwan Normal University. Jason Shih currently lives and works in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. Artist Statement

Sculpture is to interpret the beauty of light and shadow, rhythm and volume through the visual techniques of color, shape and texture. The qualities that the creators of sculpture pursue to touch people's hearts are actually as abstract as temperature and smell, but rich in profound penetrating power. This aura that directly points to people's hearts, and the aesthetic sense that makes people enter the drama in resonance, may also be like nostalgia, embodied in the nostalgia of seeing things and thinking about them, and the timid expectation of being close to the hometown.

Sea breeze, mountain mist, morning sun, sunset, in addition to shape and color, there is also the memory of temperature. Cooking smoke, hot soup, wooden tables, pottery cups, and the echo of the smell is the gradual tone of nostalgia. In people's daily aesthetic experience, the memory of temperature and smell accompanied by touch often becomes a kind of fuse to revisit the journey of old dreams. The work involved in sculpture creation is to "condense" and record all kinds of beautiful presence in this beautiful time and space in an appropriate way and with true emotions.

As a professional sculptor, I like to experience the taste of life with perceptual observation in the subtle moments, and also likes the ever-changing situation of game shapes in the poetic imaginary space. For me, art creation is to share various moods and stories in daily life.
