Artist Biography:
Susanna Patras is a professional award-winning fine art landscape and travel photographer whose images convey simplicity, elegance and a touch of mystery. Born in Romania, and American by adoption, Susanna Patras often travels between Europe and America. She has a B.A. degree in English Literature from Thomas Edison State University, and diplomas in Multimedia and Professional Photography from Sessions College for Professional Design and New York Institute of Photography.
Although she loved to paint as a child and play with her parents’ SLR, Susanna Patras started writing poetry in high school and interned at a local newspaper while in college. She won several poetry awards before making the transition to photography. In 1998, Susanna Patras moved to the United States. Soon after, she bought her first video camera and started to experiment with a new way to tell stories.
After working as an assistant in a fashion/beauty photography studio in New York, she discovered her true passion for travel and fine art landscape photography. She dedicates a good amount of time photographing nature, or natural subjects in her studio, in particular low-key black and white landscapes, seascapes, plants, and abstracts. Her work has been mostly influenced by minimalism and American modernism. Her work won several international awards, was exhibited in art galleries and was featured in several magazines, such as Landscape Photography Magazine, Dodho Magazine, Light, A Journal of Photography and Poetry, Daily Mail Newspaper, and others.
Artist Statement:
Influenced by minimalism, American modernism, poetry and film noir, my images are sometimes minimal compositions, other times contrasty, low-key black and white nature scenes using shapes, textures and space as key elements, or color landscapes with balanced perspectives and natural tones. I find my subjects in both wide and small landscapes.
Photography can relate to poetry, in particular, haiku, because it can operate with the same distillation of vocabulary. As poet Octavio Paz famously said: “I do not see with my eyes: the words are my eyes”. (Paz, 1990) Photographing in the winter or in the desert can sometimes reveal abstract or minimalist compositions that may resonate with traditional Japanese ink paintings. Composition is not only about the careful placement of the subject in the frame, but also an experiment with the space between things. This is based on the concept of “Ma”, a Japanese word that means “space” between two parts.
In my images, I express simplicity, elegance, a touch of mystery, and a quiet moment of contemplation in nature.
