Artist Statement

I have always admired all things Halloween and eerie, it's my comfort when I'm feeling down or going through tough times. There is just something about the overall feeling and atmosphere that makes me feel at peace. My love for it doesn't stop after October.

A huge part of my growth as a photographer was rekindling that childlike sense of wonder and imagination that Halloween brings me. My art embraces the dark and spookiness that guide me in creating a world that feels wondrous.

Over the years, I've had the opportunity to travel with my camera, capturing people and architecture in environments that let my creativity soar. I thrive on creating imagery that gives off a haunting ambience.

Artist Statement

From the moment I received my first camera as a young boy, I have been fascinated by how every individual sees the same imagery, and chooses to capture it, in remarkably different ways. I have long realized that my way of observing and documenting the world around us — from what I decide to shoot to how I actually proceed in doing so — is unique to me as an artist, which is why I love expressing myself through the medium of photography.

With my images, I strive to demonstrate that our world is a continuously fascinating and beautiful place offering endless aesthetic pleasures to those who take the time to observe its nuances intentionally closely. My current project, from which these five photographs have been culled, is titled Kids in the Streets.

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery is extremely pleased to announce that Susanna Patras has been named as the Gallery’s new featured artist and she will now be promoted by the gallery for the next 14 days in the gallery’s Artist Showcase.

Susanna is an award-winning fine art landscape and travel photographer based in Nevada, USA. Susanna was selected as 1 of the top twelve finalists in the gallery’s 20th Solo Art Exhibition Series. The placement in this competition qualified her art to be showcased in this feature.

Susanna’s Artist Showcase feature will be promoted to over 350+ major news outlets, with inclusion on Google News & Bing News. In addition, the gallery will also be featuring and promoting her artwork in the gallery’s various social media networks for further exposure.

Below are Susanna’s Artist Biography, Artist Statement and 5 images that were submitted to this competition.

Artist Biography:

Susanna Patras is a professional award-winning fine art landscape and travel photographer whose images convey simplicity, elegance and a touch of mystery. Born in Romania, and American by adoption, Susanna Patras often travels between Europe and America. She has a B.A. degree in English Literature from Thomas Edison State University, and diplomas in Multimedia and Professional Photography from Sessions College for Professional Design and New York Institute of Photography.

Although she loved to paint as a child and play with her parents’ SLR, Susanna Patras started writing poetry in high school and interned at a local newspaper while in college. She won several poetry awards before making the transition to photography. In 1998, Susanna Patras moved to the United States. Soon after, she bought her first video camera and started to experiment with a new way to tell stories.

After working as an assistant in a fashion/beauty photography studio in New York, she discovered her true passion for travel and fine art landscape photography. She dedicates a good amount of time photographing nature, or natural subjects in her studio, in particular low-key black and white landscapes, seascapes, plants, and abstracts. Her work has been mostly influenced by minimalism and American modernism. Her work won several international awards, was exhibited in art galleries and was featured in several magazines, such as Landscape Photography Magazine, Dodho Magazine, Light, A Journal of Photography and Poetry, Daily Mail Newspaper, and others.

Artist Statement:

Influenced by minimalism, American modernism, poetry and film noir, my images are sometimes minimal compositions, other times contrasty, low-key black and white nature scenes using shapes, textures and space as key elements, or color landscapes with balanced perspectives and natural tones. I find my subjects in both wide and small landscapes.

Photography can relate to poetry, in particular, haiku, because it can operate with the same distillation of vocabulary. As poet Octavio Paz famously said: “I do not see with my eyes: the words are my eyes”. (Paz, 1990) Photographing in the winter or in the desert can sometimes reveal abstract or minimalist compositions that may resonate with traditional Japanese ink paintings. Composition is not only about the careful placement of the subject in the frame, but also an experiment with the space between things. This is based on the concept of “Ma”, a Japanese word that means “space” between two parts.

In my images, I express simplicity, elegance, a touch of mystery, and a quiet moment of contemplation in nature.
