The “Solo Art Series” highlights the work of established artists, who have a body of work to showcase, through a series of online monthly solo exhibitions. Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the “Solo Art Series” competition: 1. Their art. 2. Their artist biography. 3. Their artist statement. A careful evaluation of the submissions led to the selection of four artists for month-long solo shows, ensuring a diverse range of artistic styles and approaches would be featured.
Presented below are Penny's artist biography and statement, together with 25 of her Neon Sea Creatures series of digital illustrations. We encourage you to peruse Penny's information and admire her art.
Artist Penny FireHorse is an award-winning healing artist whose creative journey is rooted in a profound connection to nature, spirituality, and the transformative power of creativity. Her work spans vibrant acrylic swipe paintings, hand-painted glassware, pottery, digital illustrations, and functional art. With an Art Therapy certification, she approaches each creation with the intention of fostering calm, mindfulness, and meaningful connection.
Color is at the heart of everything Artist Penny FireHorse does. She uses it as a language to express emotions, invite reflection, and celebrate the resilience of life. Whether she's painting a canvas, designing a piece of functional art, or creating digitally, her goal is always the same: to create work that resonates deeply with people and reminds them of beauty, hope, and inner strength.
Over the years, her art has received meaningful recognition. She was honored with a ribbon and cash award for her digital illustration Sunrise Rose at Art Explosion, presented by the Federal Way Arts Commission. Her fine art print Floating Dandelions was selected for a public traffic wrap installation, bringing art into everyday community life. Earlier this year, she was also celebrated with an article plaque feature in the Chicago Weekly. These honors affirm her mission to make art accessible, healing, and impactful.
At the heart of Artist Penny FireHorse’s practice is the Heart of Colors Project, a deeply personal journey that reflects her belief in the healing and unifying power of creativity. Through this project and all of her work, she strives to inspire hope, spark joy, and create space for reflection. Sharing this vision with the world—one piece of expressive hope at a time—is both her calling and her greatest passion.
The Neon Sea Creatures Series emerged from a lifelong fascination with the ocean and its mysterious, ever-changing beauty. Growing up mesmerized by the colors and movement of sea life, I have always felt a deep connection to the water—a place of healing, wonder, and transformation. Living near the Pacific Northwest coastline only amplifies that connection; the rhythm of the tides and the sheer power of the sea continually inspire my creative process.
This series was loosely inspired by a memory of Greg Norman’s iconic shark logo, which captured a bold, sleek energy that stayed with me through the years. I wanted to take that spark and reimagine it through my own lens—infusing sea creatures with vibrant neon hues, flowing shapes, and dynamic compositions that reflect both strength and fluidity.
My process begins intuitively, layering movement and color to bring each creature to life. I work with five distinct pastel tones in these digital illustrations, allowing them to mimic the way light dances across the water, while the shapes pulse with a rhythm that feels almost audible, like the heartbeat of the ocean itself. Each piece takes on a second life when viewed under a black light, glowing in the dark with an otherworldly luminescence that transforms the sea creatures into radiant, dreamlike beings.
The Neon Sea Creatures Series is ultimately about wonder. It’s about seeing familiar forms—the octopus, the seahorse, the whales, the sharks—with fresh eyes, reimagined in glowing tones that invite the viewer into a surreal underwater world. These works celebrate both memory and imagination, grounded in my love for the ocean and carried by the vibrant energy of color and light.
