The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of work to present to the public. Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the “Solo Art Series” competition: 1. Their art. 2. Their artist biography. 3. Their artist statement. These elements were evaluated and judged, resulting in the selection of the artists who will be featured in individual month-long solo art exhibitions.

Below are Katie’s Artist Biography and her Artist Statement, along with 24 of her photographs. We hope that you will take the time to read her information and to take a look at her images.

Artist Biography

Katie West is a cultural and travel photographer whose work captures the extraordinary in the ordinary, revealing the shared humanity that connects us across borders, customs, and traditions. Her photographic journey, which fully emerged after retirement from a distinguished arts administration career, transforms everyday moments into compelling visual narratives that celebrate the beauty often overlooked in our daily lives.

West's approach to photography was shaped early by her father, an amateur photographer who maintained a darkroom in their family bathroom. This childhood exposure to the craft was further refined during her college years.. Her studies provided essential grounding in camera techniques, darkroom processes, and the principles of photojournalism—particularly the art of capturing interesting and meaningful moments. This foundation in storytelling through images continues to inform her work today.

Initially focused on landscapes, seascapes, and architectural subjects, West's artistic vision expanded significantly after receiving a 2022 Emerging Artist Fellowship in Photography for her collection of Jamaican photographs from the Delaware Division of the Arts. This recognition encouraged her to broaden both her geographic scope and thematic focus, incorporating people and their stories into her visual narratives. Her work now explores how individuals live—at home, at work, at play, and in their communities—revealing the universal values, needs, and desires that bind humanity together despite surface differences.

West's artistic philosophy centers on understanding, empathy, and love of humanity. By venturing beyond typical tourist destinations, she creates intimate portraits of people in their natural environments, documenting authentic moments that convey the essence of a country or region.

Her technical approach reflects contemporary realities and a commitment to unobtrusive documentation. Working primarily with a high-quality cell phone camera, West embraces the medium's immediacy and accessibility. The ubiquity of smartphones allows her to capture fleeting moments quickly while remaining less intrusive in her subjects' spaces—a crucial consideration when photographing people in their daily lives. For West, photography is an act of the heart; her images capture what her heart sees and feels.

Since unexpectedly receiving her first gallery invitation in 2020 to exhibit Jamaican photographs, West has taught herself the technical aspects of printing, framing, and exhibition. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across multiple states and internationally online, with five photographs now part of the permanent collection at Delaware's Carvel Building. Through her evolving practice, West continues to build a body of work that celebrates cultural diversity while revealing our fundamental interconnectedness, inviting viewers to see the world—and each other—with fresh eyes and open hearts.

Artist Statement

Photography has been woven into the fabric of my life since childhood, when my father's darkroom first introduced me to the magic of capturing light and shadow. College courses in photojournalism deepened this foundation, teaching me to see not just images, but stories. Yet it wasn't until retirement that this lifelong connection to photography transformed into something more urgent—a need to document the beautiful complexity of human experience across cultures and continents.

The work began almost accidentally in 2017, with travel photographs shared casually on social media. An unexpected gallery invitation in 2020 to exhibit Jamaican images became a turning point. That moment launched a self-taught journey into the technical aspects of fine art photography—printing, framing, exhibiting—but more importantly, it crystallized a deeper purpose: to reveal the extraordinary hidden within the ordinary, the universal truths embedded in daily life.

Initially drawn to Jamaica's landscapes, seascapes, and architecture, the focus gradually shifted toward something more intimate—people in their authentic environments. These images document how communities live, work, play, and move through the world. They're attempts to bridge the perceived distances between cultures by highlighting our shared humanity. Despite vast differences in wealth, customs, and traditions, the photographs reveal fundamental connections: the same desires for dignity, joy, and belonging exist everywhere.

The choice of tools reflects this philosophy. Most images are now captured with a cell phone camera rather than traditional equipment. Modern smartphone technology has evolved remarkably, offering excellent image quality while remaining unobtrusive. This matters profoundly when photographing people in their natural habitats. A cell phone is ubiquitous, familiar, non-threatening—it allows genuine moments to unfold without the barrier of professional cameras that can create distance or self-consciousness.

Traveling beyond typical tourist destinations makes this intimacy possible. It creates opportunities to meet people authentically, to be invited into their worlds with understanding and empathy. Each photograph represents more than technical composition or aesthetic beauty—it captures what the heart sees and feels, what resonates on a human level.

The work continues to evolve. An Artist Fellowship provided validation and momentum to expand geographically and thematically, pushing toward images that don't just document but truly convey how people live. Every new location offers fresh perspectives on the infinite variations of human experience, yet each journey reinforces the same truth: we are more alike than different.

This photography practice is ultimately about attention—learning to notice beauty we might otherwise walk past daily, then sharing those discoveries with others. It's about creating visual bridges between worlds, using images to foster empathy and connection across the boundaries that too often divide us.
